San Antonio is the birthplace of military aviation and our city has a rich history of strong military support. Four premier military installations – Brooks City-Base, Fort Sam Houston, Lackland and Randolph Air Force Bases – call San Antonio home and are considered highly desirable assignments. The conversion of Kelly Air Force Base into a civilian industrial center has brought some of the world’s largest aerospace corporations to the area as well as significant sources of highly-skilled employment.
Military active-duty service men and women, and the largest populations of military retirees in the country, nearly 48,000, provide a crucial stabilizing force to the local economy.
